The Lightning Spirit with his eyes sealed, Ur is the most serious Book Spirit and appears as a scholarly young man in armor with a tendency to provide long explanations and regularly share information pertaining to his own interests partially resented by his companions. Though she has three working wings, the binding on her ankles still causes her to stumble occasionally. Mieli has a tendency to bring up the surrounding climate when summoned for advice by the hero, and favors the Northern Hammer School likely because hammers are the traditional tools of area forest-dwellers. She wears her heart on her sleeve and posesses several characteristics commonly associated with the typical, cheerful anime schoolgirl, shown hugging the others and commenting on the cuteness of certain enemy types. The Forest Spirit with her legs sealed, Mieli is found during the player’s first visit to the Granatum Forest area. Ironically, the Clow Cards were used to seal helpful elemental spirits away, and were stored in an ancient book found by the titular Sakura. She advocates alliance with the Southern Flight School of projectiles.Ĭoincidentally, when Neaki is sealed in the Book (in other words, when one of the other Spirits is equipped as the player’s guide), her image is similar to those on the Clow Cards in manga studio CLAMP‘s series, Cardcaptor Sakura, specifically the card Watery. She may be described as a tsundere-type character whose frosty, vindictive manner when regarding the newest Chosen One melts slowly over time. The Ice Spirit with her voice sealed, Neaki is the third Spirit found by the player, and regards the other Book Spirits with some opinion-Mieli habitually irritates her due to their contrasting warm-and-cool personalities, Ur is often too full of himself in her opinion, and she tends to shove around the excitable Rempo herself when addressed by him. Notably, despite his resemblance to a young teenage boy, Rempo and the other three Book Spirits are assumed to have been created at the same time. Rempo has an affinity for explosions and advises the hero to align him- or herself with Haochy the inventor and the Western Bomb School. It is shown that, although Rempo normally resents Ur’s big-brotherly ways, he and Ur will stand together in defense without a thought. He conducts himself with less maturity than the others, is quick to act, becomes annoyed easily (as the target of the majority of his fellow Spirit Ur’s lectures), and doesn’t get along with Neaki. The Fire Spirit with his arms sealed, he is the first Book Spirit encountered by the player, initially acting as a guide to basic gameplay. Taking this tome, the newly-appointed Chosen One sets out to find and befriend four guiding elemental Book Spirits who take residence in the Book, throughout the journey learning more about a hidden plot to hasten the imminent apocalypse playing out beneath a shallow political feud with the neighboring kingdom, and about the decisions of the Book of Prophecy’s previous Chosen One. This voice is, in fact, that of a magical sentient record book called the Book of Prophecy. His or her latest dream, shown in the opening cinematic, features a mysterious voice which reveals not only that the protagonist’s world has undergone countless reincarnations in the past and is fated to continue the cycle of correction, destruction, and rebirth until “true enlightenment” is achieved, but also that the main character him- or herself has been tasked by the Powers-That-Be to deem the people, places, and things of the current world worthy (or unworthy) of being carried over into the next after the fiery purge. The plot centers on a young peasant who has been plagued with apocalyptic-and, indeed, prophetic-nightmares for weeks prior to the beginning of the story.
